Plans overturned

Cloudy but with sunshine, 23C today, such a contrast to yesterday. Clare and I got up late and found that Owain was already up and finished breakfast as he woke early and couldn't doze off again. Disappointing, on his birthday, and at the start of his holiday fortnight. Handyman Suheil was supposed to come and erect a trellis against the garden wall, so we had to wait in for him before going out as planned. He came at one as we were eating lunch, having abandoned the idea of having lunch in Penarth. Clare's appointment for a consultation about a private hip replacement operation early evening was postponed until Thursday, but we persisted in driving there, walking on the pier and having a cup of tea.

Whenever we go there we end up returning at peak traffic time, something I find stressful these days and don't enjoy. When we got back Clare improvised a dark chocolate biscuit birthday cake for Owain, topped with fresh raspberries from her garden. Recovered at last from early slug attacks, the cane pyramid of bean plants is decked with flowers, promising a good crop in a month from now. The tomato pot plants she was given are already bearing plump green fruit, and it's been a great time for honeysuckle and jasmine along the back garden wall. With the heat and intermittent showers of rain vegetation has really flourished. Tree canopies in neighbouring gardens are bigger and denser than in previous years. It's a lovely time of year.

We sang Happy Birthday to Owain and drank Cava with our slices of cake. The Rachel rang, so we sung Happy Birthday again and chatted for ages. After a supper of cold meats and olives, I walked in Llandaff Fields for three quarters of an hour as the sun was setting, then returned before dusk. With two services to take tomorrow, I made an effort to get to bed on time, not all that successfully.
